About Dr. Angela Koivula, Ph.D.
Dr. Angela Koivula, Ph.D. is the Owner and Director of Affirmative Counseling and Psychological Services. She is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT), EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) as well as Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for Pain Management. She operates from a Trauma-Informed lens and is trained in EMDR though does not practice this modality currently. When not providing clinical services in her practice she is an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Florida in the Counselor Education Department teaching Counseling LGBTQ+ Clients. She also provides clinical supervision in the state of Florida and delivers workshops and motivational speeches across the country.
Angela's approach to therapy is best described as collaborative and relational with attention to viewing adults through an attachment lens. As a member of the queer community, she is an advocate of inclusivity and social justice with a particular interest in working with clients of diverse identities addressing the intersectionality of gender, race and sexuality. You will find she is both warm and engaged in the therapy process, bringing her full, authentic self into this relationship. As a Queer, Black clinician Angela recognizes her own limitations to do clinical work and brings her full self into her work with clients and on the stage with each presentation and workshop. When not working she spends her free time biking, running, swimming, competing in Triathlons and Obstacle Course Races, traveling, and enjoying a good movie with her family and her dog.
