The goal of EMBRACE is to Empower and Motivate individuals to Be yourself, Relate with others, Affirm your experiences, and Connect through Empathy.

For Fall, 2019, we will reference the book "Year of Yes" by Shonda Rhimes and guide each participant through their own journey and struggles to say "yes" to experiences that both scare and excite them allowing members to process with each other the parts of themselves that get in the way of their goals and dreams. Shonda's book will serve as a starting point and the group itself will provide a rich opportunity to explore your own inner struggles and process some of your impactful experiences. Opportunities for both individual and group reflection will be available. Many people wait until January 1st to make changes in their life. This group offers participants the opportunity to build courage, gain support, and develop new insights on your individual road blocks NOW to be ready for what is to come in the next year and beyond. Come EMBRACE the truest version of yourself and get support and validation from others looking to do the same!

EMBRACE Therapy Group is facilitated by Angela Koivula, Ph.D, a licensed psychologist and owner of Affirmative Counseling and Psychological Services, LLC.

**Please note that although this is a group that ALL individuals could benefit from, this particular group is meant to serve and empower those who identify as female or along the gender non-conforming lines. Please note that there is no specific exclusionary requirement for this group but rather a desire to provide a space where individual members and the group as a whole feel safe and validated in their experience. The purpose of placing a designation on the gender of participants is to contribute to group cohesion around shared and similar experiences of empowerment and thus disempowerment. All efforts will be made to make sure all group member feel safe, supported and validated in their individual experiences of power and privilege with respect to other parts of their identity. Uncertain if you are a good fit? Please give Angela a call to discuss your specific questions and concerns.

About "Year of Yes" by Shonda Rhimes

(source: https://www.amazon.com/Year-Yes-Dance-Stand-Person/dp/1476777128)

Shonda Rhimes is the creator and producer of some of the most groundbreaking and audacious shows on television today. Her iconic characters live boldly and speak their minds. So who would suspect that Shonda Rhimes is an introvert? That she hired a publicist so she could avoid public appearances? That she suffered panic attacks before media interviews?

With three children at home and three hit television shows, it was easy for Shonda to say she was simply too busy. But in truth, she was also afraid. And then, over Thanksgiving dinner, her sister muttered something that was both a wake up and a call to arms: You never say yes to anything. Shonda knew she had to embrace the challenge: for one year, she would say YES to everything that scared her.

This poignant, intimate, and hilarious memoir explores Shonda’s life before her Year of Yes—from her nerdy, book-loving childhood to her devotion to creating television characters who reflected the world she saw around her. The book chronicles her life after her Year of Yes had begun—when Shonda forced herself out of the house and onto the stage; when she learned to explore, empower, applaud, and love her truest self. Yes.

The instant New York Times bestseller from the creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away With Murder shares how saying YES changed her life. “As fun to read as Rhimes’s TV series are to watch” (Los Angeles Times).
